Aphids

Aphid Tree Treatment

What are Aphids?

Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects with long, slender mouthparts that they use to feed on the sap of plants. Virtually every plant can fall victim to one or more aphid species, as these pests have a wide range of hosts. Aphids reproduce rapidly, with multiple generations appearing throughout the year. In warm weather, newborn nymphs can mature into reproducing adults within a mere seven to eight days. Given that each adult aphid can produce up to 80 offspring in just one week, it's no surprise that aphid populations can multiply at an alarming rate.

While low to moderate numbers of leaf-feeding aphids may not cause significant harm to gardens or trees, large infestations can result in yellowing leaves and stunted shoots. Additionally, aphids secrete a sugary substance called honeydew, which often attracts a black sooty mold fungus. Some aphid species can even inject toxins into plants, causing leaf curling and distorted growth.

When Should I Get Treatment?

While aphids seldom pose a direct threat to the life of mature plants, the damage they inflict and the unsightly honeydew they generate may warrant intervention. At Korte Tree Care, we recommend treatment when necessary to control aphid populations and mitigate their detrimental effects.

Our treatment approach involves the strategic use of horticultural oils during the growing season, complemented by applications in February or March at the end of the dormant season. In cases of heavy infestations, we may also employ Carbaryl pesticide sprays during the growing season. Rest assured, we prioritize the use of environmentally friendly and organic aphid treatment methods whenever possible.
